Bassett Mechanical offers internship opportunities in various aspects of our business. These opportunities allow aspiring young professionals to explore different avenues they might be interested in, get exposure to a variety of roles and departments, and receive hands-on training that facilitates personal and professional growth.
This summer, we welcomed Carly V. as a Procurement intern at Bassett Mechanical. We sat down with Carly to learn more about her and how her internship is helping her achieve her dream of a supply chain career.
Meet Carly
Q. First off, tell us about yourself!
My name is Carly Ver Voort, and I am going into my senior year at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, studying Supply Chain Management. I grew up right here in Kaukauna. In school, I am the treasurer of the Student Veterans Association Club on campus. In this club, we host activities in the surrounding community for dependents, inactive or active military. I grew up in a military household so it’s something I find very interesting. In my free time, I love to be outside and travel. I am a very adventurous person!
Q. What made you want to pursue a degree in Supply Chain Management?
I chose Supply Chain Management because in high school, I had a job that gave me insights into the different business departments. At first, I didn’t know much about it, but my mom is in the supply chain industry. Through that job and my mom, I quickly gained the knowledge. Going into college, I got to learn a little bit more and I realized it was a degree that I wanted to pursue. You get to contribute to the bigger picture of the business and problem solve; I enjoyed that. Plus, who doesn’t love shopping?
Q. What type of projects have and will you be working on this summer?
I will be helping with the continuous improvement of procurement to better the department’s future. I have gained experience in annual meetings with suppliers, meeting the people I interact with almost daily who are from different departments of Bassett, and gaining hands-on experience with creating and sourcing purchase orders.
Q. What is your dream job?
I don’t have a specific job or position in mind. There are multiple departments within supply chain, but I would say procurement is one that I would want to stay in. I am glad I got an internship in it! I would enjoy a job that involved some traveling since I do like traveling in general.
Q. What skills or insights have you developed so far?
Some of the skills and insights that I have learned so far are how to prioritize different responsibilities of work like problem solving, being patient with myself, paying attention to the details, and how to communicate with the different people I work with.
Q. What are you hoping to gain from this experience?
I hope to gain a lot of hands-on work experience and understand how all the different departments work with procurement and how they benefit Bassett as a whole. As I enter my senior year, I will be getting into my degree-seeking supply chain classes, where I can take the knowledge I have learned from my internship and apply it to my schooling and vice versa as I finish out my yearlong internship.
Q. Why did you choose Bassett to pursue a Procurement internship?
I chose Bassett because I had been searching for internships for a little bit when it popped up on my Handshake page for school. It said posted 2 days ago, and I felt drawn to apply for it. It was close to home growing up in Kaukauna and constantly driving past it. It seemed like a good fit to try. I knew a little bit about the company and appreciated that they were family-owned.
Q. Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
I am someone who likes to take one day at a time when it comes to the bigger picture of life. I would hope to be in a full-time role whether that be at Bassett or somewhere else where I can continue to develop my skills and take on greater responsibilities. I want to make a meaningful impact on the workplace and help with continuous improvements.
Q. Any advice for those pursuing a degree in Supply Chain Management?
My advice to those pursuing a degree in Supply Chain is to develop your problem-solving skills and embrace the learning experiences whether that be wins or failures. Take all the experiences and networking you can take and ask lots of questions!
