CO2 refrigeration is experiencing rapid growth across North America. After gaining greater penetration in the commercial food retail space, CO2 is now being considered for various industrial applications. CO2 can be applied to most industrial applications but has clear advantages in cooler climates and when put under a constant load, as experienced in cold storage.

CO2 is becoming a more popular refrigerant due to its availability and cost to procure, lack of toxicity, lower installation cost, and reduced regulatory program requirements relative to ammonia. Like ammonia, it is a natural refrigerant. It is better for the environment, having up to 4,000 times less GWP (Global Warming Potential) and fewer PFAs (per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances) or forever chemicals relative to most synthetic refrigerants. CO2 is a resilient solution and is not susceptible to the current or forthcoming regulatory phasedowns of synthetic refrigerants.
